Scott I. Johnson, DVM, DACVECC
Texas A&M University, Class of 1986

Scott Johnson, DVM at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest AustinDr. Johnson received his DVM from Texas A&M University in College Station in 1986. He was hired by the Emergency Animal Hospital of NW Austin (EAHNWA) in 1987 as an associate veterinarian and became the owner and Chief of Staff of the hospital in 1991. The south location of the Emergency Animal Hospital was opened by Dr. Johnson in 1997. In 1999, he became the co-founder and the president of the Texas Animal Blood Bank, a volunteer canine blood bank. Dr. Johnson was a member of the Open Heart Surgery Team at the Debake Institute of Comparative Cardiology and Cardiovascular Devices at Texas A&M Universtiy, responsible for anesthesia and critical care oversight. Dr. Johnson became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2006, served on the board of directors, and is currently president. He is a member of AVMA, TVMA, VECCS, the Association of Veterinary Hematology and Transfusion Medicine, American Association of Blood Banks, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He enjoys mountain biking, scuba diving, and has a son and two granddaughters. Pets at the Johnson house include three dogs, Dylan, Olive and Midnight, and two cats, Bejou and Cowboy.


Stacy Simmonds, DVM, DACVECC
Texas A&M University, Class of 2007

Stacy Simmonds, DVM at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest AustinDr. Stacy Simmonds graduated from Texas A&M in 2007 with her DVM. Her internship was at Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus, NJ, and her emergency and critical care residency was completed at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, MA.  Dr. Simmonds achieved diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2011.  Before joining EAHNWA, Dr. Simmonds worked at a multi-specialty practice in Dallas, TX. Dr. Simmonds enjoys the variety of patients that emergency/critical care brings. Before attending veterinary school, she practiced human nursing, mostly in the emergency department, and worked in clinical trials for drug development in Austin, TX. Dr. Simmonds’ research, a case report regarding trauma in a dog (nonsurgical pneumoperitoneum), was published in the October issue of JVECC in 2011.  Outside of work, she enjoys traveling, sports, photography, and spending time with her family and her 2 dogs.


Jennifer Floyd, DVM
Texas A&M University, Class of 1994

Dr. Floyd graduated in 1990 from Duke University with an under-graduate degree in English. She received her DVM from Texas A&M in 1994. After graduation, Dr. Floyd worked in regular practice in Dallas for two years, until moving to Austin and joining the EAHNWA staff in 1996. She met her husband at this hospital and they now have three children together. They also have three cats and two dogs.


Beth Tawney, DVM
Texas A&M University, Class of 1994

Beth Tawney, DVM at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest AustinDr. Tawney graduated from Texas A&M veterinary school in 1994. She worked at a mixed animal practice prior to joining the EAHNWA team in 1997. Dr. Tawney enjoys ballroom dancing, hiking, and scuba diving, has two dogs, Charlie and Ruby and five cats, Jake, Lilly, Frankie, George and Phoebe.


Karen Burns, DVM
Texas A&M University, Class of 1997

Karen Burns, DVM at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest AustinDr. Burns graduated from Texas A&M school of veterinary medicine in 1997. She worked in emergency medicine for a year before joining our staff in 1998. Dr Burns is a cat lover and has a special place in her heart for injured opossums.


Jennifer DeRuyck, DVM
Texas A&M University, Class of 2000

Jennifer DeRuyck, DVM at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest AustinDr. DeRuyck graduated from the Texas A&M University school of veterinary medicine in 2000.  Emergency medicine was her calling so she started working at the EAHNWA soon after graduation in 2000. Dr. DeRuyck and her husband have three children, two dogs and one cat.


David Kleiman, DVM
Louisiana State University, Class of 1997

David Kleiman, DVM at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest AustinDr.Kleiman graduated from Louisiana State University veterinary school in 1997. After working in Los Vegas for several years, Dr. Kleiman joined the EAHNWA staff in 2001. He has three dogs and five cats.


John Rae, DVM
Tufts University, Class of 1983

John Rae, DVM at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest AustinDr. Rae received his degree in biology from the University of Massachusetts at Boston in 1979. He attended Tufts University in Massachusetts and received his veterinary medicine degree in 1983. He practiced veterinary medicine in the Boston area, on Nantucket Island, and on the east end of Long Island in New York for over 20 years. Dr. Rae joined the EAHNWA staff in 2002. He enjoys golf, bicycling, photography, woodworking and spending time with his family. Dr. Rae and his wife have two boys, two dogs named Robin and Max and one cat named Sweetie Bones.


Reagan Wilson, DVM
Auburn University, Class of 2003

Dr. Wilson attended Auburn University, graduating with a BS in 2000 and went on to veterinary school, graduating in 2003. She worked at small animal practices in New Orleans and Mississippi for three years before joining the EAHNWA staff in 2006. She has two cats, Ojos and Shelby, and one dog named Mingus.


Amanda Rhyne Soirez, DVM

Magna Cum Laude

Amanda Rhyne Soirez, DVM at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest AustinDr. Soirez graduated from Texas A&M University in 2007 Magna Cum Laude and joined the EAHNWA staff shortly afterwards. Dr. Soirez started working at our hospital when she was 18 years old, first as a receptionist and then as a veterinary technician. After graduating she returned to practice in 2007. Dr. Soirez has two cats and two dogs. Batman (black DSH) was adopted from our hospital in 2001 after being abandoned by his owners. Texas, is an orange tabby, Deuce is a beautiful chocolate lab that is a great dove hunter. Dixie, a lab/pointer cross was adopted from the hospital in 2008. Dr. Soirez enjoys reading and playing with her pets in her spare time.


Staci Murphy Cox, DVM
University of Georgia, Class of 2007

Staci Murphy Cox, DVM at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest AustinDr. Cox received her bachelor of science from Georgia Tech in 2000 - Summa Cum Laude. Prior to veterinary school, Dr. Cox worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a Research Fellow studying the rabies virus. She later attended the University of Georgia, receiving her veterinary degree in 2007 - Magna Cum Laude, and was a member of the Phi Zeta Honor Society. She joined our team in 2008 after completing an internship at Texas A&M University. Dr. Cox has a beautiful baby boy and loves the outdoors, traveling and cooking. She has two dogs, Otto and Caesar, and two cats, Strormi and Max.


Nicole Antalffy, DVM
Kansas State University, Class of 2010

Nicole Saucedo, DVM at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest AustinDr. Antalffy attended Texas A&M University where she received her BS in Biomedical Science in 2001. She then moved to Austin where she joined our hospital as a veterinary technician until she left for veterinary school in 2006. Dr. Antalffy graduated from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine Magna Cum Laude in 2010, moved back to Austin, and rejoined our hospital team as a veterinarian. Dr. Antalffy has 2 dogs, a blue heeler named Dingo and a mixed breed dog named Ancho that was adopted from Town Lake Animal Center.


Chelsea Pearce, DVM
Texas A&M University, Class of 2012

Chelsea Pearce, DVM at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest AustinDr. Pearce graduated from Texas Tech with a degree in Biology in 2001.  From there she decided to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine and applied to the program at Texas A&M. Four years after that initial application, Chelsea Pearce graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in veterinary medicine.

Dr. Pearce always knew that her passion was in emergency medicine and wanted to eventually focus that passion on emergency surgery.  She joined the team at the Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest Austin immediately after graduating from Texas A&M in 2012.  When Dr. Pearce is not practicing veterinary medicine, her full attention is given to her husband and two young children.  She enjoys many things in life such as her background in music, traveling, and two lovable Boxers named Duke and Bentley.


Jeff Poulsen, DVM
Texas A&M University, Class of 2012

Jeff Poulsen, DVM at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest AustinDr. Poulsen graduated from the veterinary school at Texas A&M University in 2012 after doing his undergraduate work in biology at the University of North Texas. He worked in Abilene after school, and came to Austin as fast as possible when the opportunity arose to join the team at EAHNWA.

When not practicing veterinary medicine, Dr. Poulsen enjoys spending time with his wife and 3 children, as well as reading, running, camping, and music. His family has one mixed-breed dog named Chloe and a betta fish named Rover.


Brieana Tunison, DVM

Brieana Tunison, DVM at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest AustinDr. Tunison graduated from Texas A&M Veterinary School in 2014 Magna Cum Laude. Prior to that she worked as a veterinary technician for three years, then received her B.A. in Animal Science from Tarleton State University in 2010 - Summa Cum Laude. After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. Tunison worked at a small animal practice in Georgetown, but she always knew her passion was in emergency medicine so she joined the EAHNWA in 2015. Dr. Tunison and her husband have one son and she enjoys spending time with her family, riding her motorcycle with her husband, and outdoor activities such as hiking, running, kayaking, and gardening. She has four rescued dogs - three Pit Bull mixes named Jack, Alizé, and Maya, and one Chihuahua mix named Lil' Bit. They also have a ferret named Nilla and a large fish pond full of Koi.


Chloé Matelski, DVM
Texas A&M University, Class of 2015

Dr. Chloé Matelski earned her DVM from Texas A&M in 2015. Before veterinary school, she attended Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science at the University of North Texas and earned her undergraduate degree in Animal Science from Texas A&M. She studied overseas in Kenya, Spain, and Italy and continues to travel and explore the world every chance she gets. She has a wide range of interests in emergency care from surgery to internal medicine, and she loves the challenge of treating unusual cases. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her husband, Ray, and their 3 kiddos (dogs), Zoë, Bailey, and Juno.


Jennifer Jones, DVM
St. Matthews University, Class of 2011

Jennifer Salls Jones received her DVM from St. Matthews University School of Veterinary Medicine (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) in 2011. Dr. Jones did her 4th year clinical rotations at Oklahoma State University. Since graduation, Dr. Jones has practiced in the San Marcos/Austin/New Braunfels area where she has worked in mixed animal and primarily small animal hospitals.

Looking to take her veterinary career to the next level, Dr. Jones joined the EAHNWA staff in February 2016.

In her free time, Dr. Jones loves hanging out with her husband (Hunter) and four fur-children: Zulu (Rhodesian Ridgeback), Byrdie (Great Dane), Carl (Cat) and Daisy (Quarter Horse). Dr. Jones loves to travel and spend time outdoors. She can be found doing almost anything outside from hiking to water sports to spending time on the family ranch in West Texas.


Allison Tate, DVM
Ross University, Class of 2015
Highest Honors

Dr. Tate graduated from Baylor University with a B.A. in Psychology and Neuroscience in 2008. She then worked as a Veterinary Technician for 4 years in general practice. She received her DVM from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine(St. Kitts) in 2015, after completing a year of clinical rotations at the University of Florida. She returned to the Austin area to complete her externships, one of which was at EAHNWA, developing a passion for emergency medicine. She is very excited to join the hospital team. 

Dr. Tate has three rescue dogs: Maddie(Pointer mix), Delainey(3 legged German Shorthair Pointer) and Paisley(coconut retriever, AKA island mutt). In her free time she enjoys traveling, scuba diving, boating, hiking with the pups and spending time with family. 


Kaylee McMahan, DVM
University of Florida, Class of 2016

Dr. Kaylee McMahan attended the University of Florida where she received a BS in Animal Science. She then worked at a local emergency clinic where she discovered that emergency medicine was her passion. Dr. McMahan graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016 and moved out to Austin to join the incredible team at EAHNWA. In her free time she enjoys hiking, spending time in the Great Smoky Mountains, attending live music events, water sports, traveling, and volunteer veterinary trips. She has one rescue dog named Sable.
