Emergency Treatment From Our Austin Veterinarian

Dog Attack and Fight

At Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest Austin, our veterinary team is committed to providing your pet with the best possible care under any circumstance. When your pet is in need of urgent, emergency, or after-hours care, you can be assured that our team is here for you. One of the more common emergencies we respond to is that of injuries related to dog fights and dog attacks.

Dog Fights and Dog Attacks: What to Do

Under the right circumstances, even a seemingly friendly dog can and will attack. When dogs fight each other, the results can be devastating. For this reason, it is always important to keep a close eye on your dog when he or she is in contact with other dogs or pets. Furthermore, if your dog is involved in a fight or attack, it is vital that you know how to react.

First, do your best to safely break up the fight by gaining your dog’s attention and, if possible, avoid physically getting between the dogs (for your own safety). Next, assess your dog's injuries carefully. If your dog is injured, you will need to seek immediate medical attention—especially if there is significant blood loss or obvious trauma, such as a bone fracture. When assisting or handling your dog, do so with caution. Even a friendly dog can become defensive or aggressive when injured.

If your dog requires immediate attention, you may bring your pet into either our North 183 location (which is open 24 hours) or our South Austin location (which is open nights, weekends, and holidays). From there, we can provide the care your dog needs for lacerations, broken bones, and similar injuries.
