Pet Surgery in Austin, Texas

doctor performing surgery on pet

Is your cat or dog acting painful, uncomfortable, or not like his or her usual self? If so, then it's important to keep a close eye on your pet and consider bringing him or her into an emergency vet. Here at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest Austin, we have two convenient offices with capable veterinary teams who are ready to assist your pet in the event of a medical emergency.

Common Emergencies in Dogs and Cats

There are many reasons as to why we may need to perform an emergency surgery on a dog or cat. For cats, we often perform surgeries to remove foreign objects, such as thread, ribbon, or other small objects that a curious cat may have ingested. Without proper treatment, foreign bodies can cause severe damage to the intestines and even intestinal leakage into the abdominal cavity.

In dogs, Gastric Dialation-Volvulus (GDV) is a common condition that may require surgical intervention to treat. This occurs when a dog's stomach becomes bloated, twisted or contorted, preventing food from moving through the digestive system. If not treated quickly, this can be fatal, which is why it's important to recognize common symptoms, such as:

  • Dry heaving
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Bloated, painful belly

How Our Emergency Veterinarian Team Can Help

If your pet is acting out of the ordinary and you suspect a medical emergency may be to blame, we recommend that you bring your pet in to see one of our emergency veterinarians as soon as possible. This way, we can carefully evaluate your pet's signs and symptoms, perform any necessary diagnostics, and ultimately determine the best course of treatment for your pet's medical emergency.

If surgery is needed, we are able to perform soft tissue surgeries on an emergency basis. We'll also provide the best possible after-care for your pet until he or she is well enough to return back home.
