In an emergency, moments matter. Our caring veterinarian team at Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest Austin understands better than anyone that when your pet is suffering, quick, effective action is what they need most. That’s why maintaining an in-house laboratory is one of our top priorities. The ability to analyze blood tests and perform other emergency diagnostic tests on-site can mean the difference in treating your pet right away or delaying treatment for hours, or even days, and waiting for results that may come to slowly to matter. We're proud that our clinic is one of the few Austin animal hospitals with an in-house state-of-the-art laboratory capable of analyzing complex blood work orders and other diagnostic tests. Both our North and South Austin locations maintain on-site laboratories and advanced diagnostic tools because we believe it’s the best way to provide your pet with the care it deserves.

The Value of Prompt Diagnosis

Our in-house lab and diagnostic equipment allows us to conduct the following tests quickly which helps lead to a prompt diagnosis and treatment plan:

  • Blood chemistry panels for kidney, liver and pancreas
  • Protein profile
  • Electrolyte profile
  • Red blood cell count
  • White blood cell count
  • Platelet parameters
  • Urinalysis testing
  • Canine/feline giardia
  • Canine/feline heartworm
  • Canine parvovirus
  • Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)
  • Feline leukemia (FELV)

Hopefully, your pet will never need most of these tests, but many of them are crucial in a health emergency. For example, blood chemistry panels indicate dangerous changes in a pet’s internal health—changes that may not present with external symptoms. A white blood cell count may be needed before performing an emergency surgery. Delaying surgery while waiting for test results can make the difference in your pet’s survival and recovery.

Emergencies aren’t the only times when bloodwork results are needed. Pets with ongoing health problems may need bloodwork done regularly in order to monitor the success of their treatment plan and to gauge overall wellness.

Laboratory results also help our Austin veterinarians avoid invasive procedures. Analyzing the results of multiple tests—such as a platelet count, white blood cell count and kidney panel—empowers our team to make a clear diagnosis and treat the problem with the safest and most efficient methods. Most veterinarians do not have access to an in-house laboratory and are often forced to make emergency decisions without all the necessary information.
